Education
is something that is valued all around the world. Education can empower our
society and generation for today and tomorrow. For development and proper
transformation of education there are so many social issues which are
positively and negatively affecting the transformation of education. Issues
surrounding educations are constantly changing according to the changes
occurring in the society and around the Globe. For solving these issues and
putting steps towards the development we have to invest in education and
schools and make our child capable. What children learn in schools largely
determines the person they will be later in life. These child are the pillars
of the tomorrow's society. So how the education, how the environment of the schools
of today are these determines the society of tomorrow. New problems arise every
day and each new generation will be in charge of solving those problems. One
can’t solve those problems unless they are taught to do so correctly. So for
this all we need to make our education system more systematic, qualitative and
competitive. We have to solve the social issue and be aware of these issues as
we are the education person of our country. Here we go through some of these
important issues:
3.1 Social
class and status group
There are so many peoples in the society,
some are rich and maximum are in middle and lower class. Education is a major
component of social class, both directly and indirectly. Directly, individuals
from higher social classes are more likely to have the means to attend more
prestigious schools, and are therefore more likely to receive higher
educations. Indirectly, individuals who benefit from such higher education are
more likely to land prestigious jobs, and in turn, higher salaries. Just as
education and social class are closely intertwined, stratification in education
contributes to stratification in social class.
Upper-class
parents are better able to send their children not only to exclusive private
schools, but also to public state-funded schools. Such schools are likely to be
of higher quality in affluent areas than in impoverished ones, since they are
funded by property taxes within the school district. Wealthy areas will provide
more property taxes as revenue, which leads to higher quality schools.
Educational inequality is one factor that perpetuates the class divide across
generations.
Some
impacts of social class in society.
·
Those
in high social classes are likely to have greater educational attainment than
those in low social classes.
·
Members
of high social classes tend to be better educated and have higher incomes, they
are more able to provide educational advantages to their children as well.
·
Educational
inequality is one factor that perpetuates the class divide across generations.
Here we can
say that not only the education makes skillful people and makes them powerful
but also the education promote the social inequality. For this concern
government should provide education in the single manner. There shouldn't be
any types of discrimination when providing education. There is a body that can
take this issue in control and make society more dynamic is government. In the
context of our nation there are so many types of education system, we have to
provide the quality education for the lower class group. And improvise the
government and public schools.
3.2
Caste and ethnicity
Caste
The social
issue caste has the largest class divisions in the world. Most of the nations
on Earth has suffered this social segregation for centuries and the education
system has suffered massive destruction. The caste system has had a detrimental
impact on education in our society for millions of kids of low caste. Literacy
rates around the world have been linked to the success of an individual and
their respective country economically and socially. This leads our society more
inequality and discrimination.
Caste
discrimination leads to denying individual rights or acting in negative ways
toward them, is a major problem in the society. The effects that the societal
view of caste has on students and school. Although legal proceedings have
attempted to bring racial equality to schools, the problems go far deeper than
limiting separation. That’s why education should be provide properly and we
should put our steps towards the management of this issue in our society and
the nation.
Ethnicity
Ethnicity is the next issue which comes along
with the caste. Although most society are seen as multicultural, so are
the schools. We can see clear differences between ethnic minorities.
Statistics show that clearly some ethnicity are affecting our society, culture,
language and school environment. There are many factors as to why some
ethnicity do better than others. Ethnicity can have a major effect on your
achievement but other things like- social class, gender and location can
also play a part in how better you do.
Success or failure can be influenced by what
happens within the school and classroom. If the ethnic group are lower level in
the society they might be the victim of discrimination. There might other
issues related to caste like language, gender, caste and religion also. So
if the society is promoting this types of discrimination and other
victim activities education should be the only weapon for the fighting
against these discrimination. The government and society should promote
the ethnic groups for their skill and competency development through
the education.
In most, if not all, countries, women do
not have as much power as men. They are disadvantaged in multiple ways,
including accessing education and employment opportunities, and in their
ability to control their fertility, sexual health and safety from harm.
Traditions of child marriage violate human rights, cause tremendous
suffering, and reduce opportunities for education, autonomy and a
decent quality of life. Early marriage also leads to larger families
and brings greater risk of maternal death and injury related to
childbirth. Finally it occurs as the social problem, and social issue.
3.3
Gender
The gender perspective looks at the impact
of gender on people's opportunities, social roles and interactions. Successful
implementation of the policy, program and project goals of international and
national organizations is directly affected by the impact of gender and, in
turn, influences the process of social development. Gender is an integral
component of every aspect of the economic, social, daily and private lives of
individuals and societies, and of the different roles ascribed by society to
men and women.
Social scientists and development experts
use two separate terms to designate biologically determined differences between
men and women, which are called "sex differences", and those
constructed socially, which are called "gender differences". Both
define the differences between men and women, but they have very different
connotations.
Sex refers to the permanent and immutable
biological characteristics common to individuals in all societies and cultures,
while gender defines traits forged throughout the history of social relations.
Gender, although it originates in objective biological divergences, goes far
beyond the physiological and biological specifics of the two sexes in terms of
the roles each is expected to play. Gender differences are social constructs,
inculcated on the basis of a specific society's particular perceptions of the
physical differences and the assumed tastes, tendencies and capabilities of men
and women. Gender differences, unlike the immutable characteristics of sex, are
universally conceded in historical and comparative social analyses to be
variants that are transformed over time and from one culture to the next, as
societies change and evolve.
Gender relations are accordingly defined
as the specific mechanisms whereby different cultures determine the functions
and responsibilities of each sex. They also determine access to material
resources, such as land, credit and training, and more ephemeral resources,
such as power. The implications for everyday life are many, and include the
division of labor, the responsibilities of family members inside and outside
the home, education and opportunities for professional advancement and a voice
in policy-making. Finally it creates the social class in different places,
home, school, work place, society etc. Than it influences the access of
education, job placement, home and out of home activities. For solve or making
less effect of gender education should be play the right role and make our society
more developed.
3.4
Language
In the context of
diversified society there might be so many cast and ethnic groups, this can
lead to the language diversity in the society. Language In discussions of
language and education, language is usually defined as a shared set of verbal
codes. But language can also be defined as a generic, communicative phenomenon,
especially in descriptions of instruction. Teachers and students use spoken and
written language to communicate with each other–to present tasks, engage in
learning processes, present academic content, assess learning, display
knowledge and skill, and build classroom life. In addition, much of what
students learn is language.
Countries like
Nepal, have so many local languages and the people have the mother tongue such
languages. The child from such language family must face language problems in
the school, because the school contains the students from various such groups
and the availability of the teacher and study materials from same language
might not available. This types of problems leads to the increasing rate of
class repetition, class drop rate and finally whole literacy rate of the
country cannot be increased. In such conditions the child have to do more labor
and make learn the second language in small age, this effects their learning
process and in other hand they forget their mother language. In any condition
if they came to school and complete their study, the real learning or the
concept learning might not be complete due to the language briars.
In this context of
language issue the government should facilitate the native language teacher and
proper resources for the study and make the child easier to learn. And develop
the education system accordingly. As the education person of the future we have
to be aware in such issues and make the system as much as possible favorable
for the students from different language groups.
3.5 Religion
Religion is
a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices,
morals, worldviews, ethics, or organizations that relates
humanity to supernatural, transcendental or spiritual elements.
However, there is no scholarly consensus over what precisely constitutes a
religion. Religion is the first sense of community. Your sense of community occurs
by reason of mutual experience with others. Where it is possible to destroy the
religious sense of community and with it genuine trust and integrity, then
society is like a sand castle that cannot protect itself against the inexorable
ocean.
Education and
religion are often seen to be incompatible. Religious believe in the society
makes people to believe in the supernatural things more than the scientific
things. People believe in superstition and because there are so many bad trends
and cultures in the society. People are suffered from such types of cultural
activities but they cannot change their cultural trends and religious believes.
So education is the mean for making it all possible. Inside the liberal
educational institution, there is an internal concept that religious belief is
backward and contrary to enlightenment. Schools have long been seen as gateways
to a glorious secular and technological future free from religious
superstition. After all, the purpose of education is to make children “career
and college ready,” not to impart character or moral sentiments. Some
educators go to the point of insinuating that the less religious influence upon
the student, the better. This types of conflicts in the society making us
unable to achieve our personal and sociological aims and goals. So the society
must be changed and the views of people, all the religion should be improvise
and do respect for each other, the bad traditions should be changed and prepare
positive environment in the society for every people.
3.6 Geography
A society is
a group of individuals involved in persistent social
interaction, or a large social group sharing the same geographical or
social territory, typically subject to the same political authority
and dominant cultural expectations. In the social sciences, a larger
society often exhibits stratification
or dominance patterns in subgroups. In this
context, geography is one of the important issue for socialization and
development of education. Geographic ignorance usually focus on
people's inability to locate cities, countries, and rivers, and geographic
instruction is often equated with conveying information about remote parts of
the world. From this perspective it may be a surprise to some that geography
has relevance to many of the critical issues facing society in the late
twentieth century.
Countries like
Nepal have tremendous geographic diversity.
So many cultures, religion, language, caste and status groups are generated
because of geographic diversity. People from different sides of the river
cannot understand the language of each other because of geographic diversity.
This ultimately leads us to the transmission gap of the education and
knowledge. But today's era of development this types of difficulties are
vanished but some part of the country students are using Tuin (Rope)
for crossing the river to go to school. And in Karnali region Students are
unable to get their course books till the last of the educational facial year.
One of the main cause behind this situation is Nepal's geographic structure.
Education should be equally distributed all parts of the country which is the
basic rights of the people. For the fulfillment of this right we have to
effort for solving the obstacles occurred by geographic structure and make
access equally in the education opportunity from all parts of the country.
